  • Explain the purpose, general specifications, and limitations of the rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool) used on site. 
  • Identify potential hazards when using the rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool).
  • Explain the requirements for pre- and post- use inspections of the rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool).
  • Explain the actions required to make the scene safe during the operation of a rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool).
  • Identify the most appropriate rescue tool for the task. 
  • Explain how to set up the rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool) ready for use. 
  • Explain correct operating procedures for the rescue unit (spreading and cutting tool). 
  • Explain requirements for recording inspection results and reporting faults.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Hazards when working with rescue equipment.
  • Safety precautions to mitigate these hazards. 
  • The role of cutting and spreading tools in emergency response, including: Vehicle rescue, Aircraft rescue, and Structural collapse.
  • Risks to be aware of at the accident scene. 
  • Limitations associated with the use of cutting and spreading tools.
  • Challenges faced by personnel operating these tools.
  • The components found on a typical hydraulic rescue unit and associated tools. 
  • Connecting / disconnecting high-pressure hose couplings.
  • The importance of knowing the specifications of the equipment used at your station.
  • Setting up a practical exercise to demonstrate the correct preparation and operation of the rescue unit, including the spreaders and cutters.
  • General inspection requirements.
  • Typical daily / after use, weekly, monthly, and annual inspection and maintenance tasks.
