About this course

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and competently perform a range of tasks while leading at a vehicle fire incident. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 460, Chapter 21.
  • ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (General).

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify common hazards associated with vehicle fires.
  • Recall the key areas of responsibility of an incident controller.
  • Describe important safety considerations when leading a response to a vehicle fire.
  • Identify the key factors to be considered during incident size-up.
  • Define the zones around an incident involving a vehicle fire (Hot / Warm / Cold zones).
  • Recall the variables ARFF personnel must be aware of and prepared to manage when responding to a vehicle fire. 
  • Describe key actions to take and items to consider when combatting engine fires, fuel tanker fires, and fuel spill incidents.

This course covers the following topics:

  • The hazards that may be present at a vehicle fire.
  • The three areas to consider as an incident controller.
  • Important safety considerations when responding to vehicle fires.
  • Factors to consider when assessing a scene.
  • An overview of the Hot Zone, Warm Zone, and Cold Zone.
  • Variables at a vehicle fire that ARFF personnel must be aware of and prepared to manage.
  • Key actions and considerations when combatting engine fires.
  • Key actions and considerations when combatting fuel tanker fires and spills.
  • Practical scenarios for use in practical assessments.
