About this course

This course is designed to provide learners with knowledge of airport emergency planning principles, including the role of aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) personnel and other airport stakeholders during an emergency at an airport. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Annex 14 – 9.1.1, 9.1.2.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 – Rescue and Firefighting, Chapter 11.1.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 7 – Airport Emergency Planning.
  • NFPA 424 – Guide for Airport/Community Emergency Planning.
  • FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 150/5200-31C: Airport Emergency Plan.
  • EASA ADR.OPS.

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and importance of airport emergency planning.
  • Explain the role of the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) and Airport Emergency Committee (AEC).
  • Identify the key components of an effective AEP. 
  • Describe how an AEP is activated, including emergency classifications and the establishment of an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
  • Describe the role of each agency / stakeholder involved in responding to aerodrome emergencies.
  • Describe methods for testing the AEP, including the types of exercises that can be used.

  • Making a comprehensive AEP.

  • How an AEP is activated.
  • Emergency classifications.
  • Key areas of response for external emergency services.
  • Establishing an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
  • The roles and responsibilities of the various agencies involved in major incidents.
  • How to test the AEP.
  • Types of exercises for testing the AEP.
