About this course

This course applies to individuals who use stabilization devices in the course of their duties. It is designed to support the safe and effective use of stabilization devices in an operational environment. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 460: Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual (Doc 9127) Part 1, Rescue and firefighting.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose, specifications, components, and limitations of the stabilization devices used in their workplace.
  • Identify potential hazards when using stabilization devices.
  • Explain the requirements for pre- and post- use inspections of stabilization devices.
  • Explain the actions required to make the scene safe prior to use of stabilization devices.
  • Identify the most appropriate stabilization device for the task. 
  • Correctly set up stabilization devices ready for use.
  • Explain the correct operating procedures for stabilization devices. 
  • Explain requirements for recording inspection results and reporting faults.

This course covers the following topics:

  • Stabilization basics.
  • Applications air lifting bags can be used for. 
  • The three types of air lifting bags.
  • Components of air lifting bags. 
  • Key considerations when operating air lifting bags. 
  • Safety precautions that may be required when using air lifting bags.
  • Functions and types of stabilization struts.
  • The purpose of stabilization chocks and wedges.
  • Key considerations when using these devices.
  • The use of cribbing or wood blocking in stabilization and extrication operations.
  • Features of telescopic rams.
  • Specification example – Holmatro RA3321+.
  • The purpose of vehicle airbag protection covers.
  • Inspection and maintenance procedures for lifting airbags and their control box.
