About this course

This course applies to individuals who perform a range of duties that require fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the use of ground ladders. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 (Doc 9137), Rescue and Firefighting.
  • NFPA 460 Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the types, components, specifications, and limitations of ground ladders used on site.
  • Explain pre- and post-use inspection requirements for ground ladders, including fault identification and reporting.
  • Describe the risks associated with working at height and the controls used to manage those risks, including fall prevention and fall arrest systems.
  • Outline best practices for selecting, handling, pitching, securing, and re-stowing ground ladders.
  • Explain safe communication and operating practices when working on ground ladders.
  • Describe agreed emergency and rescue procedures for incidents involving suspended personnel in fall arrest systems.

  • Primary causes of falls off ladders. 
  • Factors to consider for proper ladder selection.
  • Safety precautions when using ground ladders.
  • Fall prevention, including risk assessments and controls. 
  • Ladder components.
  • Heat sensor labels.
  • Ground ladder specifications ARFF personnel must know.
  • Best practices for acquiring (slipping), carrying, pitching, underrunning, extending, placing, and securing ground ladders.
  • Safety precautions for ascending, descending, and working from ground ladders.
  • Techniques for carrying and lowering casualties down ground ladders.
  • Communication protocols during ladder operations.
  • Procedures for inspecting and maintaining ground ladders.
