About this course

This course applies to individuals who perform a range of duties requiring fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the use of hoses and branches (nozzles). The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 1961 Standard on Fire Hose.
  • NFPA 1962 Standard for the Care, Use, Inspection, Service Testing, and Replacement of Fire Hose, Couplings, Nozzles, and Fire Hose Appliances.
  • NFPA 460 Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 Rescue and Firefighting, Chapters 12, 14, 17.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Correctly identify the components, specifications, and limitations of the hoses, couplings, and branches used on site.
  • Explain the requirements for pre- and post- use inspections of hoses, couplings, and branches.
  • Correctly identify hazards and precautions associated with using hoses, couplings, and branches.
  • Identify the correct actions to make the scene safe prior to use.
  • Identify the correct hoses, couplings, and branches to deploy.
  • Identify correct operating techniques when using hoses, couplings, and branches.
  • Record inspection results, and/or reports faults in accordance with organizational procedures.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • History of the use of hoses to fight fire.
  • Characteristics of a good fire hose.
  • Safety precautions.
  • Common injuries associated with hose use.
  • Types of fire hose.
  • Hose construction.
  • Types and features of firefighting branches (nozzles).
  • The purpose and application of: Attack hose, Intake (suction) hose, and British instantaneous (BIC) and Storz couplings.
  • Best practices for stowing, carrying, laying, advancing, and retrieving hose, including rolling and bowling techniques.
  • Hose control.
  • Hose numbering.
  • Replacing, adding, and removing a length of hose.
  • Using couplings.
  • Durability, weight, friction loss, and branch limitations.
  • The pros and cons of different types of branches.
  • Typical tasks involved in inspecting and maintaining hoses and branches, and the recommended frequency with which they are conducted.
