About this course

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to carry out routine inspections, tests, and maintenance of airport equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, and fire pumps. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual, Part 1 (Doc 9137), Rescue and Fire Fighting.
  • NFPA 460 – Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports.

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify aerodrome fire protection equipment due for inspection and/or maintenance, including hydrants, fire extinguishers, water supplies.
  • Determine the type of inspection, test, and/or maintenance required.
  • Describe the requirements for routine inspections, tests, and/or maintenance of airport equipment. 
  • Explain the process for returning equipment to full operational readiness. 
  • Record results and/or report faults in accordance with organizational procedures.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • The importance of regular inspection, maintenance, and training in the use of fire safety equipment.
  • Standards / Codes relevant to the maintenance of fire protection equipment.
  • Key types of inspections for fire safety equipment.
  • The importance of hydrant maintenance and testing.
  • Common steps to test the water pressure and flow rate from a hydrant.
  • Basic inspection of pumps.
  • Inspections of fire extinguishers installed at the airport.
  • The frequency of, and steps involved in, fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Benefits of effective record keeping.
