About this course

This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively use dry powder extinguishing agents during aircraft and aviation-related emergencies. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14, Chapter 9.2.8 – 9.2.25.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Airport Services Manual Part 1 Rescue and Firefighting, Chapter 8.2 and 8.3.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 403: Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services at Airports. (now consolidated into NFPA 460).
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 17: Standard for Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain how dry powder works to extinguish fires. 
  • Identify when and how to use dry powder in various emergency situations. 
  • Describe the types of dry powder agents and their appropriate applications.
  • Recall the limitations of dry powder as an extinguishing agent.
  • Describe techniques and best practices for applying dry powder.
  • Describe best practices for the inspection and maintenance of dry powder systems, including the storage of dry powder.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • How dry powder works to extinguish fires. 
  • Situations in which dry powder would be the agent of choice. 
  • The use of dry powder as a complimentary agent. 
  • Best practices for the use of dry powder.
  • Key safety precautions when using dry powder extinguishing agents.
  • The main types of dry chemical powders (DCPs) used in firefighting and their properties.
  • General properties of dry powder.
  • Example dry powder operating instructions (for Rosenbauer Panther vehicle).
  • Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 DCP operation and blow down and ‘fluffing’ procedures.
  • The three primary methods for dispensing DCP agents.
  • General tips for effective application of DCP.
  • Operating instructions for using dry powder at fuel spill fires / running fuel fires, undercarriage fires, and engine fires. 
  • Advantages and disadvantages of using DCP during aircraft incidents.
  • Key items to check when inspecting dry powder systems and equipment (and the optimal frequency of such checks).
  • Dry powder storage requirements.
