About this course

This course is designed to provide firefighters with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively operate at incidents using water, ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency in emergency response situations. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14, Chapter 9, Rescue and Firefighting.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) DOC 9137, Airport Services Manual, Part 1.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 403 (now consolidated into NFPA 460) Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services at Airports, Chapter 5 Extinguishing Agents.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1003: Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Chapter 4 General Requirements.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principal / primary and complementary extinguishing agents used in ARFF operations.
  • Explain the primary aim of using water in aircraft fire incidents.
  • Describe the hazards and limitations associated with using water at aircraft incidents.
  • Identify the sources of water available during an incident.
  • Explain the various application techniques when using water at an aircraft incident.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Definition of firefighting media.
  • Types of aircraft firefighting agents.
  • Principal and complementary agents.
  • Key properties of water.
  • The use of water to extinguish fires. 
  • Limitations of water as an extinguishing agent.
  • Important safety considerations when using water at fires. 
  • Sources of water for airport fire departments.
  • Inspection and maintenance of water supplies.
  • Typical areas on an aircraft where water may be applied.
  • Using water as a curtain for protection and for decontamination.
  • Disadvantages of using water in aircraft incidents.
  • Environmental considerations.
  • Methods of water application – key principles, considerations, and advantages and limitations.
  • Methods of extinguishment: direct and indirect attack.
  • Gas cooling: short and long pulse.
