About this course

This course is designed for individuals required to operate at a specialized lift rescue in the course of their duties. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 1670 Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 (Doc 9137), Chapter 18.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of lift familiarization.
  • Identify the three main types of lifts and their basic operation.
  • Identify key lift components.
  • Describe common types of lift emergencies that may require ARFF intervention.
  • Identify key actions to take on arrival at a lift rescue incident, including initial safety considerations.
  • Apply approved lift rescue procedures during and after a rescue.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • The importance of having sufficient knowledge in respect to lift rescues.
  • The need to familiarize yourself with the lifts in the buildings you respond to.
  • The three types of lifts and their basic operation.
  • The key components of a lift.
  • Notifying the lift technician / subject matter expert (SME). 
  • Common types of lift emergencies.
  • Lift recall phase 1 and phase 2.
  • Actions to take upon arrival on scene.
  • Key considerations during- and post- rescue.
  • The importance of following lift technician / SME guidance.
