About this course

This course is designed to equip firefighters with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in the use of gas testing devices. Participants will learn to effectively operate and interpret readings from various gas detection instruments, understand the principles of gas detection technology, and apply best practices in hazardous environments. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1, Rescue and firefighting, Chapter 14.
  • NFPA 1500: Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness Program, Section 7.1.1 and 7.13.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose, general specifications, components and limitations of the portable gas detector and associated accessories used on site. 
  • Identify potential hazards when using a portable gas detector.
  • Explain pre- and post-use inspection requirements for portable gas detectors. 
  • Explain correct bump test procedures. 
  • Explain correct and safe practices for the operation of a portable gas detector. 
  • Explain the requirements for recording inspection results and reporting faults.

This course covers the following topics:

  • Uses and main objectives of gas detectors.
  • Industrial, commercial, and residential applications for gas detection instruments.
  • The use of air quality monitoring systems at fire stations.
  • Fixed gas detectors.
  • Portable gas detectors.
  • Electrochemical sensors.
  • Infrared (IIR) sensors.
  • Catalytic bead sensors.
  • Photoionization detectors (PID).
  • Semiconductor sensors.
  • Appropriate positioning of fixed and portable detectors.
  • Detecting combustible and toxic gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Monitoring oxygen levels. 
  • Alarm systems on gas detectors.
  • Data logging and connectivity.
  • Calibration, testing, and maintenance of portable gas detection devices. 
  • The importance and purpose of, and key steps involved in, bump tests for portable gas detection devices.
  • Standards and regulations for gas detection equipment and safety.
  • Industrial incident case studies and lessons learned.
  • Optimal procedures for gas detection.
