About this course

This course is designed to support learners in the use of lines (ropes) and knots commonly used in firefighting. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • National Fire Protection Association NFPA 1003 Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.
  • National Fire Protection Association NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Chapter 4.3.20.
  • National Fire Protection Association NFPA 405 Standard for the Recurring Proficiency of Airport Fire Fighters.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airport Services Manual, Part 1 – Rescue and Fire Fighting, Chapter 14 ‘Training’.

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose, types, specifications, and limitations of lines (ropes) used in their workplace.
  • Identify hazards and safety precautions associated with the use of lines, including PPE requirements and risk controls.
  • Explain inspection requirements for lines, including scheduled, pre-use, and post-use inspections.
  • Explain the various types of lines used by ARFF personnel.
  • Identify common knots used by ARFF personnel, including their purpose and typical applications.
  • Explain requirements for recording inspection results and reporting faults.

This course covers the following topics:

  • The safety of rescue ropes.
  • Safety precautions when working with ropes.
  • Types of rope construction.
  • Rope specifications.
  • Common knots used by ARFF personnel.
  • The purpose and application of ropes in ARFF operations.
  • NFPA standards regarding ARFF ropes.
  • The purpose and uses of, and steps in tying, common types of knots used in ARFF operations.
  • The key limitations of ropes and knots.
  • The retained strength of rope using various knots.
  • Requirements for the care, cleaning, inspection, and storage of ropes.
  • When to remove a rope from service.
