About this course

This course is designed to support learners to effectively operate at incidents using firefighting foam, ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency in emergency response situations. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14, Chapter 9, Rescue and Firefighting.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Doc 9137, Airport Services Manual, Part 1.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 403 (now consolidated into NFPA 460) Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services at Airports, Chapter 5 Extinguishing Agents.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 11: Standard for Low-, Medium-, and High- Expansion Foam.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1003: Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Chapter 4 General Requirements.

  • Identify the specific objectives associated with the use of foam in aircraft fire incidents.
  • Explain the hazards and limitations associated with using foam at an aircraft incident.
  • Describe the properties, categories, and types of firefighting foams used at airports. 
  • Explain how foam works to suppress and extinguish fires. 
  • Explain the various application techniques when using foam and when they should be used.
  • Summarize emerging technologies in firefighting foam
  • Describe best practices for testing, inspecting, and maintaining foam-making equipment.
  • Describe best practices for foam storage. 
  • Calculate the required foam concentration at spill scenes involving flammable liquid spills.

  • Primary agents vs. complimentary agents.
  • The use of foam in ARFF operations.
  • Hazards associated with firefighting foam.
  • Key properties of firefighting foam that contribute to its effectiveness.
  • Factors affecting foam performance.
  • Performance levels for firefighting foam: ICAO Level A, B, and C.
  • Categories of foam: low, medium, and high expansion firefighting foam.
  • Types of firefighting foam available and their key characteristics.
  • Class A foams.
  • Wetting agents.
  • How firefighting foam works – physical and chemical mechanisms.
  • Foam proportioning systems.
  • Using turrets.
  • Foam-making nozzles / branches.
  • Primary methods of applying firefighting foam.
  • The effectiveness of a foam blanket.
  • Important tips when applying foam.
  • Compressed air foam systems (CAFS).
  • Smart firefighting branches / nozzles.
  • Nanotechnology – enhanced foams.
  • Foam additives.
  • Care of equipment – what to check for.
  • Foam storage and testing requirements.
