About this course

This course is designed for individuals required to respond to incidents involving a helicopter in the course of their duties. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 460.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14, Aerodromes.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Airport Services Manual Part 1 rescue and Firefighting (Doc 9137).

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe basic helicopter design features and operational characteristics.
  • Identify key helicopter components that may affect responder safety during an incident.
  • Recognize common hazards associated with helicopters.
  • Identify safe approach and exclusion zones when responding to incidents involving a helicopter.
  • Explain key operational considerations and safety precautions when responding to helicopter incidents as part of an ARFF response.

  • The importance of understanding helicopter features and hazards, and key operational response procedures associated with helicopter incidents.
  • A helicopter’s unique characteristics.
  • The basic construction and components of a helicopter.
  • Helicopter rotor system configuration.
  • Fuel used in helicopters.
  • Specific hazards found on helicopters.
  • Risks of autorotation.
  • Hazards involving military helicopters carrying armaments.
  • Additional hazards for ARFF personnel – hydraulic systems, pressurized tyres, and magnesium wheel components.
  • General considerations when responding to a helicopter incident.
  • Specific challenges of a helicopter crash.
  • Practical steps to take or consider.
  • The importance of reviewing and reflecting on the information in this course.
