About this course

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively respond to an aircraft engine fire as part of a team. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Annex 14, Chapter 9.2.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 (Doc 9137) Rescue and Firefighting.
  • NFPA 460 Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main types of aircraft engines and engine fires.
  • Identify the main components of an aircraft engine, including the spinner, fan, compressor, combustor, turbine, exhaust, propellor, magneto, and their function.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the type and location of aircraft fire detection and extinguishing systems.
  • Describe the properties and hazards of common aircraft fuels.
  • Recognize hazards associated with aircraft engines, including jet blast, projectiles, and helicopter-specific risks.
  • Explain common causes of aircraft engine fires and the tactical considerations for responding to them.
  • Outline standard ARFF procedures for engine fire response, including size-up, communication with the flight crew, and basic incident action planning.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Types of aircraft engines.
  • Aircraft engine components.
  • Aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) shutdown and extinguishing panel.
  • Engine fire detection and protection systems.
  • Defining the term ‘flashpoint’.
  • Types and properties of aircraft fuels.
  • Potential hazards during an incident involving an aircraft engine.
  • Dos and don’ts of operating near an aircraft engine.
  • The dangers of jet blast.
  • Hazards around a helicopter.
  • Jet aircraft projectiles.
  • Common causes of engine fires during start-up, take-off, and during flight.
  • Unique considerations for tailpipe fires. 
  • Size-up.
  • Important elements of an effective incident action plan.
  • Procedures for responding to an engine fire.
  • Communication with the flight crew.
  • Example of an aircraft engine fire tactical plan.
  • Dual agent application to extinguish an engine fire.
