About this course

This course explains the design and construction characteristics of aircraft undercarriage systems, the hazards these systems present, and the actions to be employed at incidents in which undercarriages are involved. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • CAA-UK, CAP699, ‘Framework for the competence of rescue and fire fighting service (RFFS) personnel.’
  • General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) United Arab Emirates, CAR Part XI, Sections 3.4.15 and 12.2.11.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 402, ‘Guide for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Operations’.
  • International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airport Services Manual Part 1, Rescue & Fire Fighting, Chapter 12, ‘Aircraft firefighting and rescue procedures’.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and basic design of aircraft undercarriage systems.
  • Identify the main components of an aircraft undercarriage system.
  • Recognize common causal factors associated with aircraft undercarriage incidents.
  • Identify hazards and hazardous zones associated with undercarriage systems, including the “aircraft undercarriage disintegration zone”.
  • Outline key safety measures to take when responding to aircraft undercarriage incidents.
  • Explain the range of fire suppression techniques suitable for incidents involving aircraft undercarriage systems.

  • Different types of undercarriage (landing gear).
  • What is an undercarriage?
  • Different components of an undercarriage system.
  • Wheel fans.
  • Common causes of undercarriage accidents.
  • Hazards associated with undercarriage systems.
  • Hazardous zones to be aware of when responding to aircraft undercarriage incidents.
  • The “aircraft undercarriage disintegration zone”.
  • Fire behaviour.
  • Strategic considerations.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Different fire suppression approaches for undercarriage systems.
  • Case study #1: Delta Air Lines Flight 1086 (2015).
  • Case study #2: Emirates Flight 521 (2016).
  • Case study #3: British Airways Flight 2276 (2015).
