About this course

This course is designed to familiarize personnel with the working principles and operation of the fire vehicle pump, monitor (turret), and outlets. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 1003 Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1, Rescue and firefighting.

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between reticulated and non-reticulated water supplies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of instruments used to measure flow and pressure.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of nozzle discharge.
  • Define the terms head / pressure and ‘friction loss.’
  • Calculate the friction loss of hoses and branches used by their organization.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Key characteristics of branch / nozzle discharge.
  • Head / pressure meaning and characteristics.
  • The importance of understanding the application of hydraulics as a fire pump operator. 
  • The principles of pumping water.
  • Key principles of pressure.
  • Six basic rules regarding pressure in liquids.
  • Pressure, head, and height loss / gain.
  • Principles of pumping water – frictional loss.
  • Calculating friction loss.
  • Jet reaction – what is it and how to overcome it?
