About this course

This course is designed for individuals required to respond to a bomb threat in the course of their duties. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 Rescue and firefighting (Doc 9137), Chapter 11.
  • NFPA 472.
  • NFPA 405.
  • NFPA 1003.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the risks faced by ARFF responders during bomb threat incidents.
  • Describe key features and components of bombs.
  • Identify common types of explosives.
  • Recognize the different ways a bomb can cause damage, including the effects of a bomb blast.
  • Identify indicators of suspicious letters and packages.
  • Summarize common operating procedures when responding to a bomb threat, including measures to protect the public and responding personnel.
  • Explain the key considerations when conducting a size-up and supporting evacuation efforts.

  • Risks faced by ARFF responders at bomb threat incidents. 
  • Ensuring the safety of both the public and responding personnel.
  • Key features / components of a bomb.
  • Different ways a bomb can cause damage.
  • Effects of a bomb blast.
  • How to identify suspicious letters and packages.
  • Different types of bombs and explosives.
  • Case study – Brussels, Belgium 2016.
  • Common operating procedures for responding to a bomb threat.
  • General considerations for evacuation.
  • Considerations for size-up.
  • Scenarios involving a bomb threat / explosion – prompting learners to consider the risks, hazards, and challenges associated with the incident, and appropriate safety measures and response procedures and tactics.
