About this course

This course applies to individuals who are tasked with undertaking firefighting training and operational response activities in difficult environments. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual, Part 1, Doc 9137 – Chapter 18.
  • NFPA 1582 – Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the common effects of working in heat.
  • Recognize the risks and impacts of elevated body temperature on firefighter health and operational safety.
  • Identify work activities that may cause heat-related illnesses.
  • Explain what controls can be introduced to mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of first aid procedures appropriate to heat-related illnesses.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • A case study highlighting the hazards associated with working in extreme heat conditions.
  • The two sources of heat for firefighters.
  • How heat is generated in the body and the factors impacting it.
  • An overview of thermoregulation.
  • The impacts of high body temperatures for firefighters.
  • An overview of hydration.
  • Environmental effects on sweat.
  • Monitoring and managing sweat and hydration.
  • Strategies for cooling the body.
  • The two main types of heat-related illness, and strategies to treat them.
  • Advice for fire services and managers/supervisors.
