About this course

This course is designed to assist learners in providing support and meeting the needs of individuals affected by emergencies encountered through their duties. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Airport Services Manual, Part 1, Doc 9137 – Chapter 18.
  • NFPA 1582 – Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.

  • Describe the role of a peer support officer.
  • Explain the meaning of ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ dangers. 
  • Describe the ‘make it safe’ concept. 
  • Define the terms ‘stress’ and ‘Critical Incident Stress (CIS)’. 
  • Describe the causes and effects of CIS.
  • Explain ways to prevent CIS and mitigate its symptoms.

  • The causes and effects of CIS.
