About this course

This course is designed to familiarize learners with the general layout, and key structures and features of an airport. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • NFPA 460, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual Part 1 – Doc 9137, Rescue and Firefighting
  • ICAO Annex 14 – Chapter 9.2
  • EASA 139 – ADR.OPS.B.010
Competencies

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key airside features of the airport, including runways, taxiways, and apron areas.
  • Describe key airside safety features, including stopways, Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs), runway holding positions, and runway guard lights.
  • Describe the equipment and unique hazards found on the apron. 
  • Explain the meaning of the markings, lighting, and signage found on the airside at an airport.
  • Explain the purpose of crash gates for ARFF personnel. 
  • Identify the purpose and basic types of navigational aids found at an airport. 
  • Identify hazardous and restricted areas on or in the vicinity of the airport, including areas around navigational aids.
  • Correctly interpret the information conveyed by wind indicators and tower lighting signals. 
  • Describe the location, function, and hazards of the major facilities found at an airport, including those represented by the COPHAL acronym.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Applicable terms and definitions.
  • The importance of airport familiarization for ARFF personnel.
  • What is a runway?
  • Key markings and signs on a runway.
  • Preventing runway incursions.
  • What is a taxiway?
  • Applicable markings, lighting, and signs on a taxiway.
  • The importance of clear communication and of complying with ATC instructions.
  • What the apron area is, and the functions, equipment, and vehicles utilizing it.
  • Applicable areas and markings on the apron.
  • The various types of lighting found on runways and taxiways.
  • The purpose of access gates for ARFF personnel.
  • The purpose and key types of navigational aids.
  • Restricted areas and their enforcement around navigational aids.
  • Hazards caused by navigational aids.
  • Wind indicators.
  • The types of tower lighting signals and their meaning.
  • The acronym ‘COPHAL’ and its meaning.
  • The facilities found at an airport that ARFF personnel should be familiar with, and the hazards these facilities may pose.
