About this course

This course is designed to equip learners who regularly use the aerodrome during day-to-day duties with a familiarization of aircraft. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

  • ICAO Annex 14 – Chapter 9.2.42.
  • ICAO Airport Services Manual – Part 1, Rescue and Firefighting – Chapter 14.
  • NFPA 1003 – Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of aircraft familiarization.
  • Describe the common materials used in aircraft construction and the main aircraft components.
  • Describe the key design differences between fixed-wing, cargo, and rotary-wing aircraft.
  • Describe how the different types of aircraft engines work. 
  • Recognize the hazards associated with common aircraft systems, including fuel, pressurization, and electrical systems.
  • Explain the functions of aircraft safety systems, such as fire extinguishing and evacuation systems, and their importance in ARFF response.
  • Identify standard and emergency entry and egress points on aircraft.
  • Identify the types of hazards ARFF personnel may encounter and appropriate safety precautions and response measures to take. 
  • Identify the main hazards posed by military aircraft.

Course content

This course covers the following topics:

  • The importance of aircraft familiarization. 
  • The three core objectives of the ARFF service. 
  • The role of an aircraft database and crash charts.
  • The main categories of aircraft.
  • The major stresses to which all aircraft are subjected.
  • Common materials used in external aircraft construction and cabin furnishing.
  • The five main components of a fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Common design differences of cargo aircraft.
  • Structural differences in helicopter construction.
  • Key features of the aircraft mainplane / wings, tail, and undercarriage.
  • Aircraft engine types and how they work.
  • Aircraft fuel types and fuel systems.
  • The types of pressurized systems found in an aircraft and their purpose.
  • Aircraft electrical and extinguishing systems.
  • The components of an aircraft evacuation system.
  • Potential biological hazards ARFF responders may encounter and standard precautions to minimize the risks of exposure. 
  • The risk of composite fibres to ARFF personnel and protection measures that can be taken.
  • The types of environmental hazards ARFF personnel may encounter.
  • Responding to aircraft undercarriage incidents. 
  • The danger zones around an aircraft.
  • How military aircraft can pose a hazard to ARFF personnel.
