Solutions: Training Management, Employee Engagement

Houston Airport System (HAS) is a key department within the City of Houston, managing three major airports: George Bush Intercontinental, one of the busiest airports in the U.S.; William P. Hobby, known for its convenient domestic travel options; and Ellington Airport, a critical hub for military, NASA, and general aviation. Serving millions of passengers annually, HAS plays a vital role in the region’s connectivity and economic development, ensuring the smooth operation and growth of these critical transportation hubs.

The Vision: Workforce Modernization

Committed to operational excellence, HAS places a strong emphasis on employee engagement, transparent communication, and career development. To enhance workforce management and boost employee satisfaction, HAS’s top management identified two key areas for improvement:

1) Training Management: Efficiently capturing, categorizing, and tracking employees’ training, competencies and skillsets to ensure they are fully qualified and compliant for their roles.

2) Employee satisfaction and engagement: Creating a transparent working environment and providing career growth opportunities.

"Our vision at HAS is to create an environment where our employees can thrive and grow. By implementing Klayo, we're not just modernising our workforce management—we're empowering our team members with the tools they need to take charge of their careers and contribute more effectively to our operations”.

Jim Szczesniak, A.A.E., Director of Aviation, Houston Airports

Challenges faced by HAS

1) Fragmented Training Management: Employee training was tracked across disconnected platforms, making it difficult for managers to monitor completion and compliance.

2) Lack of Job Role Clarity: Standard job classifications specified by the City of Houston didn’t accurately reflect the specific duties and qualifications required for airport operations.

3) Limited Visibility of Internal Talent: Managers do not have visibility of existing employee skills and qualifications across HAS.

Klayo Solution: Centralized View of Training and Data Transparency

To address these challenges and innovate their workforce management, HAS implemented Klayo, a leading cloud workforce management platform for airports. The solution has been rolled out to 1,354 employees, with over 60% already actively using the platform and on track to reach 100% by the end of 2024.

Klayo provides a comprehensive platform that centralizes training management, enhances data transparency, and supports career development initiatives.

"Managing training in a complex airport environment has always been challenging. Klayo, will allow us to view employee qualifications and easily identify training gaps. This helps us maintain compliance and strategically develop our workforce to meet evolving operational needs”.

Julie Landry, Chief Workforce Innovation and Development Officer, Houston Airports

Key benefits of Klayo for HAS

While HAS is still rolling out Klayo, the system is positioned to significantly enhance workforce management, drive operational efficiency, and improve employee satisfaction as adoption continues.

Top three anticipated benefits of Klayo for HAS

1) Centralized Workforce Data: Klayo will offer a unified platform for tracking employee training and qualifications, leading to more efficient management.

2) Training Gap Analysis: The platform will enable HAS to identify and address training gaps, helping the organization stay compliant and meet job-specific requirements.

3) Career Path Clarity: Employees will gain insights into the skills, competencies, and qualifications needed for future promotions or role changes within the organization.

"One of the reasons we chose Klayo was its potential to help our employees advance their careers within HAS. The platform will allow them to explore internal opportunities, see what qualifications and training are needed, and make informed decisions about their next career move”.
