Deepen Your Knowledge of Airside Safety

Deepen Your Knowledge of Airside Safety

Airside safety is not a subject you cover once and consider done. The environment changes, standards evolve, and the consequences of gaps in knowledge or practice can be severe. For airport professionals who work on or around the airfield, sustained investment in safety training is part of what it means to do the job well.

The airside safety certificate pathway provides a structured way to build and deepen that knowledge, from foundational principles through to specialized advanced topics. Whether you are completing initial safety training or looking to formalize years of practical experience, there is a clear progression available.

Certificate I in Airside Safety

The Certificate I in Airside Safety combines five online safety courses into a certificate-level program that provides participants with a broad knowledge and understanding of the key elements of airside safety and how they function together within the airport's overall Safety Management System. It is well suited to initial or recurrent safety training for all airport employees and service provider personnel.

On completing this certificate, participants will gain an understanding of:

  • The unique nature of the airside environment, the various roles and responsibilities required to maintain a high level of safety, and the major elements of airside safety including common hazards
  • How to apply the key principles, concepts, and elements of Safety Management Systems to increase aviation safety across the organization
  • The fundamental concepts of human factors and how to effectively manage human performance issues in an airport context
  • Approaches to enhancing safety, improving operations, and preventing or reducing accidents, incidents, and occurrences on the apron
  • The threat posed by Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and the critical elements of a FOD program that helps airports manage this risk successfully

Each course within the certificate includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Certificate II in Airside Safety: Further Study

For those who have completed Certificate I, the Certificate II in Airside Safety continues the learning pathway by exploring more specialized areas of airside safety. It builds directly on the foundational knowledge established in Certificate I, broadening a professional's understanding of how to establish and maintain safe airside operations in more complex or challenging situations.

Topics covered in Certificate II include:

  • Producing emergency plans that enable an airport to effectively cope with a crisis and return to normal operations as quickly as possible
  • How to employ defenses to prevent accidents and incidents and how to approach and conduct the accident investigation process at an airport
  • Planning for the safe management of airport construction projects, including maintaining operations during building and upgrade works
  • Applying methodologies and best practices to achieve a high standard of runway safety
  • The key elements of Wildlife Hazard Management and how these are integrated into an airport's Wildlife Hazard Management Plan

Together, the two certificates form a comprehensive airside safety pathway that takes professionals from foundational awareness through to specialist knowledge. Explore both programs and the full Klayo catalogue of ACI-accredited safety courses at klayo.com.
