About this course

Aprons are often the most congested and busiest areas of an airport. They are home to demanding and complex activities that are carried out under severe space and time constraints.

The Apron Safety and Operations Management course provides guidance that brings together the best elements of managing apron safety from the experience of airport operators around the world. It provides aerodrome operators with a comprehensive set of guidelines to enhance safety, improve operations and to prevent or reduce accidents, incidents and occurrences on the apron.

This course can be taken as part of the Certificate I in Airside Safety for those wishing to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the key elements of airside safety and how these elements combine as part of the airport’s overall Safety Management System.

This course is also available in Spanish and French.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand best practices for the planning and design of apron layouts and facilities.
  • Recommend effective standard operational practices for safe apron operations.
  • Describe effective processes for managing maintenance and construction activities on aprons.
  • Recognize how to enhance safety, improve operations and prevent or reduce accidences, incidents and occurrence on the apron.

  • Managing hazards on the apron to ensure the health and safety of staff working airside.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • The role of safety promotion.
  • Accident, incident and occurrence reporting.
  • The importance of stakeholder agreements in apron operations.
  • Safety considerations in apron planning and design.
  • Visual aids used on the apron.
  • Fundamentals of safe ground vehicle operations.
  • The principles of safe airside driving.
  • Requirements for driver training.
  • Key risks associated with aircraft operations and how to mitigate these.
  • Elements of safe aircraft fuelling procedures.
  • Key elements of apron management.
  • The role of apron inspections in apron safety.
  • Stand allocation and aircraft turnaround.
  • Ensuring safe aircraft ground handling and servicing.
  • Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) operation.
  • Managing key hazards – including dangerous goods and foreign object debris (FOD).
  • Passenger safety.
  • Major hazards presented by adverse weather conditions on apron operations and how to manage these.
  • RFF procedures and their impact on apron safety.
  • Elements of emergency management.
  • Apron infrastructure and facilities maintenance.
  • Key elements of apron construction management.
