The Airfield Electrical Systems and NAVAID Maintenance course outlines best practices for maintenance programs for airfield electrical systems and navigational aids (NAVAIDs).

  • Define key maintenance tasks, and the frequency with which they are typically undertaken, for: Apron lighting, Airfield ground lighting, Airfield power supply systems, and Aircraft visual guidance docking systems. 
  • Identify who is responsible for, and key considerations concerning, the maintenance of NAVAIDs.

  • Inspections and illumination measurements.
  • The key components of an airfield ground lighting (AGL) system.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of different AGL system designs.
  • Key considerations when planning and executing AGL maintenance. 
  • Recent technological advancements in airfield ground lighting.
  • Troubleshooting AGL faults.
  • Typical frequencies for the maintenance of each element of the AGL system.
  • The importance of resiliency / quality of power supply. 
  • Methods of airfield primary and secondary / emergency power supply. 
  • Key components of the airfield HV / LV electrical system.
  • Example maintenance program for the airfield power supply system.
  • Maintenance of Fixed Ground Power systems.
  • What Aircraft Visual Docking Guidance Systems (VGDS) are.
  • Critical VDGS maintenance tasks and the frequency with which they are typically completed.
