Airport Environmental Management

Airport Environmental Management

Environmental responsibility has moved from the margins of airport strategy to the center of it. Regulators, communities, airlines, and investors are all applying greater scrutiny to how airports manage their environmental footprint, and airports that cannot demonstrate a structured, credible approach to sustainability are increasingly at a disadvantage. Having an Environmental Management System in place is no longer a mark of ambition. For many airports, it is becoming a baseline expectation.

Understanding the principles behind effective environmental management, and knowing how to implement them in an airport context, is an increasingly important capability for operations managers, sustainability leads, and airport executives alike.

ACI's Commitment to Environmental Management

Airports Council International (ACI) has long been at the forefront of aviation's sustainability agenda. Its environmental initiatives are designed to promote sustainable development across the industry, with a focus on limiting or reducing environmental impacts while continuing to support economic growth and the social benefits that aviation provides.

As part of that commitment, ACI has developed dedicated environmental management training programs to help airports build the knowledge and systems they need to operate more sustainably and meet the expectations of an increasingly environmentally conscious world.

About the Certificate in Airport Environmental Management

The Certificate in Airport Sustainability and Environment Management is used by airports worldwide to build a thorough understanding of the core principles of sustainable development and environmental management as they apply to airport operations. It is a practical, structured program that moves from foundational concepts through to the implementation of real systems.

The certificate covers seven key areas:

  • Airport Environmental Management and Sustainable Development — the principles, frameworks, and strategic context for managing environmental performance
  • Noise Management and Community Relations — understanding noise impacts, regulatory requirements, and how airports engage with affected communities
  • Managing Local Air Quality — the sources of air quality impacts at airports and how they can be monitored, reported, and reduced
  • Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Management — measuring emissions, setting targets, and implementing strategies to reduce an airport's carbon footprint
  • Resource Management — approaches to energy, water, and material use that reduce waste and improve efficiency across airport operations
  • Waste Prevention and Management — frameworks for reducing waste generation and improving waste handling and recycling across the airport
  • Implementing an Environmental Management System — a practical guide to establishing, operating, and improving an EMS within an airport context

Why This Training Matters

Environmental management at airports is complex. The impacts span noise, air quality, energy consumption, water use, biodiversity, and waste, and addressing them requires both a clear understanding of the issues and a structured system for managing them over time. Professionals who complete this certificate come away with the knowledge to make a real difference: understanding what the impacts are, what the regulatory landscape requires, and how to build and maintain the systems that deliver sustained improvement.

For airports working toward ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation or other sustainability certifications, this training also provides a strong foundation for the evidence-based management approaches those programs require.
