The Airport Security Officer Recurrent Training: Walk-Through Metal Detection course provides guidance on the correct procedures for using a walk-through metal detector (WTMD) during security screening. 

It covers pre-operational testing, standard operating procedures for WTMD use, responding appropriately to alarms or screening outcomes, and ensuring individuals are cleared before entering a security restricted area.

This course forms part of the Airport Security Officer Recurrent Training (ASORT) Program, designed to support ongoing compliance, competency, and best practice in airport security operations.

Competencies obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and detection capabilities of walk-through metal detectors (WTMDs).
  • Describe the safety and pre-operational checks required for a WTMD.
  • Describe the correct procedures for conducting screening using a WTMD, including alternative screening procedures for persons unable to undergo electronic metal detector searches or unable to walk through the WTMD.
