The Accident and Incident Investigation course will explore the fundamentals of accident and incident prevention and investigation at airports.

It guides learners on how to employ defenses to prevent accidents and incidents from occurring and how to approach and conduct the accident and investigation process at their airport.

This course can be taken as part of the Certificate II in Airside Safety for those wishing to broaden and deepen their understanding of how to effectively establish and maintain safe airside operations.

The Accident and Incident Investigation course covers the following topics:

  • The major causes and serious consequences of accidents and incidents.
  • Prevention strategies.
  • The purpose and benefits of investigations.
  • Steps in the investigation process:
  • Commencing the investigation.
  • Gathering and retaining evidence, including applying effective interview techniques.
  • Analysing information and determining underlying causes and contributing factors.
  • Making safety recommendations.
  • The role and responsibilities of an investigator.
  • The personal qualities and knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) of effective investigators.
  • Training requirements for investigators.
  • Reporting requirements.
  • Monitoring investigation outcomes.
  • Following up to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
